Dr. Mark Biesinger Awarded 2025 Chemistry Research Excellence Award for Groundbreaking Contributions to XPS and Surface Analysis

The Research Awards Committee is delighted to announce that Dr. Mark Biesinger has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Chemistry Research Excellence Award.

Mark has demonstrated an exceptional research track record throughout his career, and especially in the past 5 years. Mark is an internationally recognized expert in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). He has several seminal and highly-cited publications in the field which focus on improvements in both sample analysis and data interpretation techniques, particularly in the analysis of transition metals. In the past 5 years, he and his research group have produced 27 papers, and he has delivered 12 invited, keynote and plenary presentations at leading surface analysis and materials conferences such as the American Vacuum Society’s AVS 68th International Symposium & Exhibition, Microscopy & Microanalysis 2024, and ECASIA24 - the European Conference on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis.

Dr. Biesinger’s recent research is directed at understanding the nature of adventitious carbon and its effectiveness in its use in charge correction procedures applied to XPS analysis for insulating materials. This work has garnered significant attention from the surface analysis community. He is also focused on improving analysis techniques for Canada's Critical Minerals, with recent and upcoming publications on the XPS analysis of graphite, In, Mg, Fe, Cd and Zn containing materials.
